Like your friend, I see your demand to impeach Trump, though perhaps justified, has not a chance in hell of happening, let alone a conviction. When your friend says your idea is on the fringe, I imagine he’s not referring to your opinion or your wish. We may all agree on the appropriateness of impeaching Trump. Rather, the fringe you’re on is your own detachment from reality to think such a thing is possible, at least at this point in time, particularly given the MAGA crazies that are in control of the government these days. Demanding impeachment as you have frequently done on your commentaries is like demanding an end to racism in America. Damn right! But good luck for the foreseeable future. . . . . . As they say, elections have consequences and, for the time being, we have to live with that.
I'm still interested in learning how you propose to stop Trump and his daily outrages.
The value of an impeachment investigation would be to remind people of the horrible and unconstitutional and illegal things Trump has done, and their consequences for ordinary people. Throwing a spotlight on them could help build support for actually impeaching him and removing him from office. Most people don't remember things for long. They need to be constantly reminded.
The great defect of the previous impeachment investigations was that they ignored their educational potential while focusing excessively on the outcome of the votes.
It seems to me that failure to try to launch an impeachment investigation in the House represents the cowardice and lack of imagination of the Democrats.
We are in the middle of an attempted fascist coup. Without active resistance in the House and the Senate such as I recommend, the chances of rescuing our democracy from the fascist push in progress appear minimal.
Other approaches appear to be based on blind faith that things will turn out well.
I believe that, based on the record of events, that faith is not justified.
