A prayer for the children of Syria
First published in The Trenchant Observer on December 24, 2012
Prayer for an Alawite Child
I understand,
Just like me, you want to be happy,
Just like me, you want to be free of pain,
Just like me, you want to be loved,
Just like me, you want to be free from anxiety,
Just like me, you want to be free from fear,
Just like me, you want to know peace.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
May you be safe,
May you know peace.
Prayer for a Sunni Child
I understand,
Just like me, you want to be happy,
Just like me, you want to be free of pain,
Just like me, you want to be loved,
Just like me, you want to be free from anxiety,
Just like me, you want to be free from fear,
Just like me, you want to know peace.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
May you be safe,
May you know peace.
Prayer for a Christian Child
I understand,
Just like me, you want to be happy,
Just like me, you want to be free of pain,
Just like me, you want to be loved,
Just like me, you want to be free from anxiety,
Just like me, you want to be free from fear,
Just like me, you want to know peace.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
May you be safe,
May you know peace.
And let us say the same prayer for all of the children, of all of the other minorities, of Syria.
